Happy At Houlihan's

Hola!

I hope this week has been treating everyone well! The weather is finally warming up here again and there has been no rain the past two days ... woo hoo! I seem to always talk about the weather at the start of my posts ... hmm ... I guess it's a good ice breaker? Ha.

Anyways, I'm here to talk about eating out, or at least a recent experience of ours. We don't eat out a lot to save money and unless you go somewhere more expensive than fast food it's just probably not going to be healthy. Now onto my story. Here is me wanting to go out for dinner instead of cooking. (Ha, except I wasn't really grumpy or mean ... I was just posing ; )See?? I was happy!Normally when we want to go out, we drive to Kansas City (about 45 minutes to an hour from us) because there's better choices and it's just more fun. Buuuut, we were really hungry and just didn't feel like the drive. So, we racked our brains for where to eat here. Now, our town is full of restaurants but we never know where to go because we don't really like many restaurants here. It's basically full of fast food and big chains. As far as eating out here is concerned, we frequent Panera and Chipotle and that's about it. We didn't want either.

We then both looked up random restaurant's menus online to see if there was anything that sounded good and fit our bill for healthiness. After much debate, we decided upon Houlihan's. When eating out, when possible we like to look at the menu and nutritional facts beforehand so we can pick something we know we will enjoy and feel good about, therefore getting our moneys worth. So, we had looked at an online menu from the closest Houlihan's to ours (as it wasn't online). We both had something picked out and thought, this'll be good! Before leaving ... So we got there, sat down and started to look at the menus and lo and behold ... tons of it is WAY different. Go figure that our Houlihan's has none of the healthy stuff we had already picked out to order. We were disappointed at first, buuut oh well, what can ya' do? So, we improvised.

We started out with Tuna Wantons for an appetizer. (Sorry, the pics are dark!) Then, I ordered the Mandarin Chicken Salad sans wanton strips with the dressing on the side. It was huge and looked SO good. Upon first getting it, Erik looked at it and said to me, "Where's the chicken". I said, "Oh, it's there" and then started mixing my salad around only to discover ... it wasn't!! Haha, we thought, maybe it's just a mandarin orange salad?? So we asked our waitress and a few minutes later, she brought we out my forgotten chicken breast :s haha.

Erik got a huge salad too (but not the same one) and they remembered his meat, haha. All in all, we ended up being very pleased because both salads and the appetizer were delicious! We pretty much finished off our huge salads (Erik helped me), and had a wonderful time together talking and eating.

What's your favorite restaurant or type of place to eat at?
There's a few chain restaurants we like to go to, but our favorite places always end up being the unique little cafes that you have to search for.

Have a great rest of the week!!! : )

  2. Oh wow, you and your husband look so cute together, and mmmm everything looks so good. LOL on the forgotten chicken!

And my favorite type of place to eat would be vietnamese places. But I much rather enjoy my mom's vermicelli bowls instead of a restaurant. Ever since being away from home, it makes me like homecooking wayyyyyy more

  3. You guys are so cute!! Sorry it wasnt what you expected, but it looks delicious!

I like trying new places that arent chains, but its so hard to get my hubby away from Chilis and places just like it!

  4. Aw you guys are adorable!! What an experience though! Glad you still enjoyed yourselves :)

I'm not a fan of going out to eat only because where I live there aren't many veggie friendly options other than salads. However, ethnic restaurants never fail!

  6. I never really thought they menus were diffenrent at different locations- weird!

I usually stay away from chains. If I go out, its generally going to be someplace really nice or ethnic. I feel ripped off when I think that I could make the same meal better and cheaper.

  7. You and your husband look SO good together!

I like going out for food I can't make as well at home - Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Thai, Indian..

  8. We have the same problem. Okay, well it's more my issue than my husband's, because I am the most indecisive person when it comes to choosing a meal out. I think that I just love to cook so much, that when I am going to go out and pay for someone to cook for me, I want it to be something that I wouldn't cook for myself. That is why I usually choose ethnic (sushi, thai, indian..etc) Or I go the oppoiste and only am satisfied with the most expensive gormuet places.

We were just at Houlihan's this weekend. We went out for a family dinner and this is one of the fam's favorite spots. I do have to say, Houlihan's is definitely one of the better chain restaraunts out there. I ordered a new dish on the menu. It was an asian salad with mango, peanuts, wasbi peas, and rare tuna. Quite tasty!

I haven't found a good place to eat out in US, because I don't have my bf here, so what's the point of eating out to romantic places?! but I do love eating out when i was in Argentina... well.... you saw it! :)

  11. I've never been to Houlihan's, but the Half Marathon starting line was right in front of the one here. I might have to try it some time.

That said, I do really prefer going to small, non-chain places. (Okay, I will admit to liking Chipotle & Steak N Shake....)

  12. You guys are too cute! And that dinner sounds amazing. The tuna must have been awesome. And I just love big salads. Good thing they brought you the chicken!

Hope you have a great Thursday girl! It's almost the weekend ;)

  13. I hear you on eating out! We use to live in a town that really only had chains. I think one of my favorite parts about Charleston are there are A LOT of smaller, family run restaurants. Lots of them have veggie or low fat options.

  14. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Houlihan's. It's one of my favorite places to go. I'm glad it's like and hour away from me. HAHA!

  16. I love little unique cafes, too....I TRY to avoid chains but sometimes I cave! One chain I do like is McAlister's Deli - love their veggie chili and turkey sandwiches - yum!

  18. I do the same thing, I look up menus like days in advance before going out to eat :) Love it!

Your salad looks great, at least they brought you out the chicken breast! hahah

I LOVE going out to eat, there are tons of local restaurants here in Amherst, MA and even in NY, when I'm home, I try to go to local places instead of chains.

  21. you and your husband make such a blessed beautiful couple! love your pics together.
that's weird that they would have a different menu from what they posted online. but those salads look great, and the tuna wantons look amazing!
for restaurants, I like someplace quiet and private, and preferably with GOOD lighting. I can't stand rowdy restaurants where you can barely hear yourself speak or think, and esp restaurants that are so dark you can't even really see your food! so I guess I'm like you...I love cafe style, brightly lit places like Panera. best of all, they have plugs for your compueter and wireless, too!

  22. i like thai places because usually they have options for me that are healthy and non-vegetarian options for kyle (if he wants it). although the other day he order tofu pad thai and i nearly rolled over in my grave i was so excited!!! he wouldnt even let me swipe a tofu chunk off his plate!

  23. i've only been to houlihan's once and i was pleasantly surprised! the service was great and so was the food. iwas not trying to be healthy though so ican attest to the fact that they make a mean burger, haha!

  24. I'm the same way. I always look online to see what's the healthiest pick. If I have time, I will confer with my sister, and the most important thing though??? Stick to it!! Don't cave at the end. I always feel so much better about leaving when I've done well!!

Kudos to you guys for eating as healthy as you can there!

There are a few sites that have calories for a lot of restaurants:

P.S. You guys look so cute together!!

  25. There's not many good places to eat where I am either. I think I can cook way better food than some of what those chains serve up. I don't tend to eat out much because I much prefer to relax at home and enjoy food I know is healthy. If I do go, I try to pick a place where I know I can get meat and veggies.

  26. haha i cant believe they forgot your chicken! the salad looks yummy though :)

  28. Haha you are so funny with your serious face pictures! I am totally with you, my husband and I LOVE to eat at little, weird, new places. On our Honeymoon in Aruba we ate at one hotel restaurant and we never made that mistake again. Every other time we went out it was a local place. Our favorite types of restaurants tend to be Mediteranian.

  29. I agree about Kansas City having awesome restaurants! I go there to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins each summer and love all of their restaurants!

At home, I like Jason's Deli (mostly because of the soft serve! :D )

  30. Hi Leslie,
First of all, you are still gorgeous!! Nice photo of you & your hubby, too. :-)

I know what you mean eating out healthy, unless you live in LA or NYC the average town doesn't have a whole lot of choice. I have one restaurant and a health food store I frequent. Other than that, I look for ethnic food or the rare vegan (or rarer macrobiotic)restaurants.

In macrobiotics they say if you are in a situation wher you "have" to eat something you wouldn't ordinarily eat, enjoy it, and chew it REALLY well. Makes sense to me.

p.s. I LOVED the quote you aded at the end!!

  31. The Chicken salad without the chicken looks good! lol!

I really like the local Calhoun's Taste of Tennessee apart from the Chinese and Sushi places.

  34. Oh wow, I don't know my fav. place!

You are too cute with the grumpy and happy face- love it! I hate when bad experiences happen to good restaurants. Glad everything turned out alright.
Happy Weekend! Thanks for all the comments too-I can't wait to be married :)

  35. love the "lets please go out to eat face" haha. puppydog faces get em everytime!!

I also love looking for little unique restaurants to eat at, most of my friends and family are not very perceptive of that though.

Hope you have a fab. weekend pretty girl! Love ya!

  37. Love the story of the missing chicken breast! I once had eggs benedict without hollandaise - when I pointed that out - I was told the hollandaise had evaporated. (I don't think so) I sent it back for non-evaportating hollandiase! The appetizers looked great! Over the years, my husband and I have started avoiding chains (hard to do in White Bear Lake, MN). Love La Belle Vie in Minneapolis - but only can afford to go there every two years!
