Lifting and Clean Eating Part IV: My Current Diet
As mentioned in Part II, after making the initial changes in my diet and sticking with them for awhile, it became easier and easier to pick less calorie, less fattening foods and I became more and more interested in healthy eating. Once I lost all the weight I wanted to loose and as my knowledge increased, I began making even more healthy changes such as "real" foods vs. processed and artificial sweeteners vs. "real" sweeteners.
- We begun getting sprouted bread or 100% whole wheat instead of 45 calorie bread
- I started eating old fashioned oats for breakfast vs. FiberOne cereal
- Began using Stevia based sweeteners vs. Splenda
- Having Larabars, Pure bars, Kind, or Weil bars vs. Quaker 90 Calorie granola bars
- 2% cheese vs. fat free cheese
- More Almond milk, less skim milk
- Natural Peanut Butter vs. things like sugar free jelly
- Greek yogurt vs. popcorn for snacks
- More water vs. crystal light and other artificially flavored zero calorie drinks
- No more dependency on sugar free gum
- I began consuming more healthy fats (don't be afraid of them!!)
- More complex carbs
- More protein
- More balanced portion of veggiesAfter slow adjustments I ended up at these as my current daily stats:
- 1800-2200 calories (non lifting days) 2300-2800 (lifting days) … basically, depending on my activity level
- 30-60 grams healthy fat
- 130-150 grams protein
- 140-150 grams complex carbs
And here is an approximate day of eats:
Breakfast: 1/3 cup oats with frozen berries & 2 egg whites, 1 egg w/ hot tea
AM Snack: One or two pieces toasted sprouted/whole wheat bread with a serving of peanut butter and half sliced banana on top
Lunch: Around 1/3 lb of some type of meat and/or eggs (aka some type of protein), with little less than 1 cup brown rice, and some type of veggies
PM Snack: Piece of fruit w/ PB, or Lara bar, etc w/ tea
Post Lifting Shake (if I lift that day and also means stats will be higher that day):
Dinner: Same type of meal as lunch but will less carbs
Before Bed: 1/2 cup cottage cheese with a few walnuts or almonds, cinnamon, and 1 packet of stevia
On top of that, I typically shoot for about a gallon of water a day.
I feel very good about my current diet. I never feel restricted or hungry and I’m able to build muscle and loose fat at the same time. And I splurge when needed : )
All this being said .... if I can go from McDonald's and Taco Johns (I used to always get a bean burrito with sour cream, small order of potato oles with a side of ranch and of course a medium or large pop) to this .... anyone can do it!!! This is really the last thing I ever thought I'd be doing, but here I am doing it. It's just a matter of getting enough help, knowledge, and motivation to get going and stick with it. And it takes time!

I think this is a great post. You've made a really healthy transition, and it's very inspirational! Thanks for taking the time to write all this out, Lesley!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have made some great changes!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite of the series so far! You know I'm a big believer in clean eating so hooray for this post. So glad you have found a good, healthy, FILLING way of eating. And of course I'm a crazy brussel sprout lover too. The only thing I am a little puzzled on is almond milk vs. skim milk. Can you tell me a little bit about why almond milk is "cleaner" than skim? Let me know :) Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this post makes me feel so much better!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou have such an AMAZING view on healthy eating and I am so proud of the changes you have made. You're story sound a lot like mine and I have made some of the same wonderful changes in my diet as you. It's truly amazing how your body feels when you treat it right.
I love you girl! You are such an insipration and I am so happy that you are providing so much light and hope to so many women who are struggling with healthy eating. Your story is great!!!
I think you've made some very healthy changes. Isn't it funny how eating too many veggies CAN be a bad thing?? I mean I've noticed bloating sometimes and have linked it to my veggie consumption, but how awesome is that, I mean to think I could have been eating TOO MANY veggies! Some people don't even eat any. And, I LOVE brussel sprouts, especially roasted with garlic and pepper.
ReplyDeleteLove the ending quote! It's great how much you've improved your diet. I started a diet similar to the one you started with (relying on Hungry Girl recipes--though now I kind of hate them!) Blogging has really helped my eating habits! Healthy food can really be delicious!
ReplyDeletetotally jealous of that sour cherry tree!!! :) and i've made alot of those changes too--great series!
ReplyDeleteIts so interesting to think too many veggies would be bad for you. I really like how you totally broke down what you eat. I still can't believe there are days you have 100 ounces of water. Its very impressive. I try for 60 ounces, but its hard.
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I've never had brussel sprouts?! I need to try them.....
ReplyDeleteI LOVE water. I drink over 140 ounces a day...I don't know if there's such thing as drinking too much? :-)
I love how you demonstrate that eating LIVING things is healthier...even if it means more calories and fat. You go girl...I am doing a research project right now on artificial sweetners.
ReplyDeleteIf you have the chance, email me a photo recipe of a meal that is JUST made for YOUR cravings and check out all my giveaways (3!)
i meant to say fit* whoops!
ReplyDeletei love these series of posts of yours - thanks so much for doing them, ESPECIALLY this one because it shows that a person can still be fir and healthy and eat over 2000 calories =)
ReplyDeletenow THIS is a true healthy diet! none of that "low-calorie" and "artificial" stuff! every woman should read this and take note that a diet is not about fat-free muffins and carrot sticks!
ReplyDeleteI like all the changes you're doing now versus what was before... it's much healthier and more filling I think. good job! :)
ReplyDeleteyou epitomize pefectly the importance of a healthy diet! for a long time i believed the "healthy = low cal/low fat/low carb" when just the opposite is true. our bodies NEED calories, fat and carbs - just from the proper sources :) you are a power woman girl and thank you so much for sharing your story!
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteJust came across this post on your site and I LOVE it!
